چکیده

We present a comparison between the 2001 XMM–Newton and 2005 Suzaku observations of the quasar, PG 1211+143, at z = 0.0809. Variability is observed in the 7 keV iron K-shell absorption line (at 7.6 keV in the quasar frame), which is significantly weaker in 2005 than during the 2001 XMM–Newton observation. From a recombination time-scale of <4 yr, this implies an absorber density n > 4 × 103 cm−3, while the absorber column is 5 × 1022 < NH < 1 × 1024 cm−2. Thus, the size scale of the absorber is too compact (pc scale) and the surface brightness of the dense gas too high (by 9–10 orders of magnitude) to arise from local hot gas, such as the local bubble, group or warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), as suggested by McKernan, Yaqoob & Reynolds. Instead, the iron K-shell absorption must be associated with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) outflow with mildly relativistic velocities. Finally, we show that the association of the absorption in PG 1211+143 with local hot gas is simply a coincidence, and the comparison between the recession and iron K absorber outflow velocities in other AGN does not reveal a one-to-one kinematic correlation.

On the Nature of the Z = 0 X-ray Absorbers: Ii. the Contrast between Local and Agn Host Galaxy Absorption

We search for highly–ionized gas near three AGN host galaxies using the Chandra low–energy transmission grating spectrograph. Strong absorption lines from such gas are seen at z = 0, most likely from one or more of the following components: (1) a Galactic corona, (2) the Local Group medium, and (3) an extended warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filament passing through our local overdensity. ...

The Galactic Environment of the Neviii Absorber toward He0226−4110

We report the discovery of a small galaxy system in the vicinity of the NeVIII absorber at z = 0.20701 toward HE0226−4110. The galaxy system consists of two 0.25 L∗ disk galaxies and a 0.05 L∗ galaxy all within ∆v < 300 kms−1 and ρ≤ 200 h−1 physical kpc of the absorber. We consider various scenarios for the origin of the NeVIII absorption, including photo-ionized gas from a AGN, a starburst dri...

Constraints on Hot Metals in the Vicinity of the Galaxy

We have searched for evidence of soft X-ray absorption by hot metals in the vicinity of the Galaxy in the spectra of a small sample of fifteen type I AGN observed with the high resolution X-ray gratings on board Chandra. This is an extension of our previous survey of hot O vii and O viii absorbing gas in the vicinity of the Galaxy. The strongest absorption signatures within a few hundred km s o...

Non-equilibrium Ionization State of Warm–hot Intergalactic Medium

Time evolution of the ionization state of metals in the cosmic baryons is investigated in a cosmological context without the assumption of ionization equilibrium. We find that a significant fraction of ionized oxygen (Ovii and Oviii) in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) is not in the ionization equilibrium state at a redshift of z≃ 0. We also investigate the effect on the detectability a...

Cosmological hydrodynamic simulations predict that the low redshift universe comprises a web of warm–hot intergalactic gas and galaxies, with groups of galaxies and clusters forming at dense knots in these filaments. Our own Galaxy being no exception is also expected to be surrounded by the warm–hot intergalactic medium, filling the Local Group. Some theoretical models also predict the existenc...
